Courthouse Quilters was established in 1988 and dedicated to the preservation of our quilting heritage through education. We have approximately 100 members from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Our level of experience ranges from beginners to national contest winners and teachers. We are interested in quilt history as well as quilting techniques and design.
We often hold workshops with nationally known speakers as well as with our very talented Guild members. We are fortunate to have guest speakers and members present the latest techniques of the quilting community. These workshops are offered at a nominal fee and when space is available, guests are welcome. Other afternoon programs may center around charity work, special Guild project or are just open sew time for fellowship and sharing.
At our evening program always includes a review of Guild business matters. Members also have access to a substantial lending library, enjoy delicious refreshments, and view members' works during the popular Show and Tell. Often the speaker from the afternoon workshop completes the evening with an enjoyable and informative lecture and/or trunk show of her work. An evening program could also include a group activity, project or celebration.
Our wonderful QUILTS AT THE MILLS SHOW is held the 1st weekend in October, every other year. At our 2010 Show we hung over 200 quilts and quilted items, which were viewed by more than 1200 people. This popular Show includes quilting demonstrations, vendors, food, demonstration, exhibits and an auction of miniature quilts. It is also the venue during wich we draw the winner of our Guild's raffle quilt, The Guild's next Show is scheduled to be held at the Prallsville Mills in Stockton, NJ on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 5, 6 & 7, 2012. This 2012 Show will mark our 10th Anniversary of Shows presented at the historic Prallsville Mills site.
The Guild holds an annual challenge where a chosen theme determines the quilt's characteristics. Past challenges have inluded the required use of a particular fabric, color block or theme. The quilts are presented at a spring meeting which has traditionally been the April meeting and the challenge projects are presented in conjuction with the Guild's anniversary party. In 2009 the Guild participated in a decorated bra challenge which was continued into 2010 and became a charity fundraiser with proceeds donated to the Hunterdon Medical Center for Breast Cancer Research. You can read about the 2012 Challenge on our QUICK LINKS.
We have an on-going Charity Committe involved with constructing and distributing quilts to local individuals and families in need. Our outreach program is two-fold, some quilts are donated directly to individuals or families while other quilts are donated to provide fundraising opportunities for charities such as Hospice and The Women’s Crisis Center. We also participate in various other onging national projects such as the Con-Kerr pillowcase collection and Quilts of Valor for our armed military personnel.
The Storybook Quilts traveling exhibit is comprised of childrens' books with quilt themes and a matching quilt that coordinates with the story. It is available to local elementary schools and libraries on loan, free of charge. For information on current openings or to be added to our schedule, please email us for more information.
