If you have ever seen two large suitcases being rolled into or out of the local elementary schools around Hunterdon County and beyond and wondered what was in those big suitcases, here is the answer. Quilts and Books!
In 2006, a member of the Courthouse Quilters, Chris Englehart, approached the membership with the idea of starting a collection of children’s storybooks which have quilts in the main story line. The membership was asked to make quilts to illustrate what the quilts in the books look like. The collection started with just a few books and quilts but over the years, the collection has grown to 20 quilts and books that travel from school to school or to local libraries during the summer. The project has been very popular and we have received many positive comments about the program. Some of the teachers use the quilts as a lesson in math, history, reading or art which have had enthusiastic responses from the children. For more information about the project or to schedule a date for receiving the quilts and books for a 3 week period, contact either: Janet Silliman at janet@silliman.net or call 908-638-684 Ruth Gronsky at rmkg64@comcast.net or call 908-638-6849
